pumpkin time

31 October 2005

On Saturday we went to Kayla’s first pumpkin carving party. She seemed to really love the pumpkins. Halloween was fun too, though she was asleep for most of the trick or treaters that came by.

Feeding day!

24 October 2005

So it finally happened. That ever awaited for introduction of solid foods. We chose yams for the occasion, and had a little yam fest. It was a day after Kayla’s 6 month birthday, and what a beautiful day it was. The autumn has been amazing gorgeous so far. Anyhow, dad did most of the feeding to Kayla. There were some sour faces, smiles and spoon grabbings. We’re not convinced that she actually ate much of it. She did quite a bit of bffting that seemed to spit most of it out again. For a while she looked like she was choking too. We got a video of that in case anyone wants to give me a second opinion, and Tim had to keep reassuring me that she was okay. Even though she wore most of what was fed to her, she did take spoonfuls of every last bite. (In subsequent feedings, yes I am backdating the entry, she has refused anything after one or two bites. I am assuming this is normal and okay. Right, you other moms and dads out there?).

Need a smile?

18 October 2005

This hat just had me smiling for most of the day!

Kayla has been really recognizing her name for the past week or two. She has also begun babbling again after a brief hiatus. She still gets frustrated when at a table or somewhere where she can’t reach items, but at the same time this shows her curiosity. She still loves being around other babies and hams it up when she notices people smiling at her. She’ll keep looking at them hoping they will smile more. Kayla’s arm smacking has turned into a smack mommy on the back dealo, which maybe I should try to aim better and get a semi massage out of the deal, hee hee. We’ve shared a few belly laughs this week, and I still cherish her giggles. The other night we were both laying on the floor laughing, and it gave me a glimpse into the future when she is a little bit older and we are enjoying each other’s company on a different level. (Hopefully she will still laugh with me then…eek). But for now I thank Kayla for those shared moments.

Tim is on another business trip this week, in Montreal. He left Sunday and will be back on Friday night.

First swim

13 October 2005

I took Kayla to the pool for the first time this week. She seemed to love it! It was very cute. Our neighbor has been going with her 9 week old and convinced me to go with her. I bounced with Kayla which made her giggle. When I held her away from my body (still in an upright position), she kicked her legs and splashed a bit with her hands. I also laid her on her back to float, kind of like we do in the tub. At first she was somewhat apprehensive, but then decided it must have felt safe enough, because she bent her legs and happily began sucking on her toes. It was very funny and cute. I also got up the courage to put her face in the water. I was told that babies have a reflex up until 12 months (I think) where if you blow into their mouth they will take in a breath, and then you can get their face in the water. April tried it with Holt first, and then I later gave it a go with Kayla. Seemed to work just fine. I would like to try and get her to the pool somewhat regularly. She was in a really good mood for several hours afterwards.

I don’t have any pictures of the swim, but here is one of her with great grandma Delores from her and Wayne’s visit last weekend.

Kayla is seen here with a sippy cup. We gave it to her because she wants everything “adult”. She enjoyed sucking on each part of it, even though she wasn’t drinking out of it. Soon my child, soon.

One other thing we noticed this week, was Kayla propelling herself forward a bit. She seemed to accomplish this by rotating one hip and kind of scooching forward. I haven’t seen much more of that yet, but yet another feat for her to work on.

early dental care

7 October 2005

Now that Kayla can sit up for longer (it appears sitting was what she was working on), I have been putting her up on the sink while I brush my teeth. (Yes, she is safely surrounded by my body should she fall). She has been watching me and reached out to grab a toothbrush for herself. I found it really cute and managed to take a picture of her while spotting her as well, not always an easy feat.

update

5 October 2005

Since the last entry it’s hard to remember all we’ve done. I have been feeling super tired (and consequently forgetful) as Kayla has been somewhat cranky lately. She is certainly not her usual happy self. We can’t figure out if she’s teething, working on some new feat, bored or frustrated about not being able to reach certain things, etc. We are hoping it will pass soon, or at least I am. It’s been better the last couple of days. Even though she resists the sitting position frequently, when she will allow it she can sit for longer unassisted. Maybe that is what she is working on.

On Saturday we went to an introducing foods seminar. Sunday we got coffee, other than that the day is gone from memory. Kayla and I went to an infant massage class on Monday. She was almost too fussy, but worked it out in the end and had some good massage time. There was only one other baby there so we had mostly a private session. Today Leslie and Vaughn came for a play date. The last time we saw Vaughn was about two months ago, so it was really he and Kayla’s first time hanging out. It was fun to see Leslie and see her enjoying her mommyhood. Tonight I treated myself to a much needed massage. It was great as my body has been hurting from carrying this munchkin around.
