Sitting and drumming

31 August 2005

Yes, this is Kayla sitting on her own. Okay, so it was only for about two seconds, but hey she’s four months old. The picutre is blurry, but as I said before, I only had a second or two before she fell over. And, Kayla really doesn’t like to be in the sitting position at all. This was somewhat of a fluke. You can see that Oma had to entice her with quite a pile of toys. Yes this girl prefers to be in a standing position and will hold her body rigid most often when you try to put her in a sitting position.

Oma sat (yes Kayla will sometimes sit on your lap) with Kayla at the drum, and Kayla actually copied Oma. Oma would take a turn and hit the drum, then Kayla would hit the durm. Other than the bfffftt sound, this was the only time I really recall Kayla copying.

The Taft history

28 August 2005

We had an interesting visit with the Tafts today. Most of the time was spent trying to recount a family tree. Tim was hoping to collect some family info to have on record for Kayla. It was quite a comical event of trying to recount the names of those in the family. Along with the recounting came some interesting stories which we of course did not record. Maybe we will remember some of them down the road.

Oh those silly noises

27 August 2005

Kayla made her first raspberry sound on Friday. I think I would call the sound for how it sounds, but that would be a little tricky. Something like bfffft. We heard the sound and made it back to her, who in turn made the sound back at us, and we were all laughing and bffft-ing for some time.

It is now her new trick and is accompanied by lots of drool. Blowing bubbles is also a big hit with her. She entertained herself throughout most of our visit with Sonom, Marla and Ava yesterday. As Sonom said, it’s Kayla’s first joke.

Kayla grows again

25 August 2005

At her four month appoinment Kayla weighed in at 12 pounds 13 ounces. She measured 24 inches.

2 years and 4 months

23 August 2005

Today was our two year anniversary. We celebrated by having a picnic up on Magnolia bluff. It was a nice time and Kayla seemed to love having us both there with her. She of course couldn’t get enough of her daddy… Miss Kayla also turned four months today!

She did it for real

16 August 2005

Yes, she rolled over from tummy to back three times today. I agree that it looks more like falling down, but she did it. This is a picture of her right after the second time.

The other large feat for her today is that she found her “voice”. Or so I’ve heard it called. It sounds more like screaming and screeching to me. I think Kayla was trying to sound like her older cousins. I really haven’t quite heard the voice to that extent in the last few days. Phew. It’s not quiet, especially in the car… But she is still cute even when she is voicing herself.

Here she is with those sweet nephews of mine.

does this count...?

Okay, so rolling over may technically mean a complete roll, but how about this…
From tummy to her side and then to her back. She did take a rest on her side, but hey, she’s never done that from her tummy before. Way to go Kayla! Kayla has been rolling onto her side quite a bit. She is better to the left side than the right. We also spotted her grabbing her foot while laying on her side.

This morning she also shook her little shaker along with Bembe. A young percussionist in the making?

Port Townsend

9 August 2005

Kayla and I went out to Port Townsend for a couple of days to visit out there. What a great place, with a view of Discovery Bay. The boys and I kicked the ball around some on the lawn, and Peter, Ryan and I took a walk on the beach one morning. It was so great to have the extra hands and helpers with Kayla. Ryan really seems to have taken to Kayla and was a big helper encouraging her on her tummy time. He is very curious about Kayla eating her milk and all the intricacies of baby-ness.

Owen is proving to be quite the photographer and took lots of shots including the top photo. Ryan took the second shot of Kayla on her tummy.

The yard at this house is surround by blackberries, so we went out to pick enough for a yummy pie that Peter made. We also went blueberry picking one day. Well, I should say that I picked a handful at most, everyone else picked a total sum of about 6 pounds. Kayla still gets cranky when she is tired and still needs help getting to sleep.

Earth Fair

7 August 2005

On Sunday we headed over to the Isle of Vashon and went to the Earth fair. We met Ezra at his house and walked through the woods to the fair grounds. It was great to walk through the woods. We stopped for some blackberry munching on the way in and out.

The fair was sparsley attended, but mostly how I expected it would be. We ran into Nancy who kindly minded Kayla while we got a bite to eat.

Kayla continues to make her static radio sound. This started about a week or two ago. It is pretty cute. She’s had also two nights with a seven hour stretch of sleep, though far from the norm. She does usually get a 5 hour stretch at first, but when she goes to bed so early, I get about 2 hours of that. I feel as though I’m back to sleeping less just because of the interrupted sleep.

Mahnkes visit.

3 August 2005

Angela, Peter, Owen and Ryan arrived on the 3rd of August. They stayed with us for a few days before joining my folks out at Port Townsend. We went down to Pike’s place market where the boys were brave enough to pick up some crawfish.

We then went to the aquarium for a relaxing (ha ha) look at some marine life. It was so full of day camp kids and families that Kayla and I were overstimulated. I did get a good look at the jellyfish and the otters… It was great for Owen and Ryan.

This is Kayla playing with her first fire truck.

So what's Kayla been up to?

2 August 2005

Well, laughing for one. Kayla has been giggling for several weeks now, but nothing quite like tonight. She laughed for several minutes and just giggled her head off. I look forward to more of that.

Kayla of course continues to grab things and is really getting good at it. The other day I noticed her sticking both arms out as if to ask to be picked up. Her feet continue to be more involved in her play as well. She hasn’t grabbed onto them with her hands yet, but does grab (used loosely) some of her hanging toys with her feet. When Kayla gets mad or frustrated now she will arch her whole body as it goes rigid. This of course is combined with some sort of grunting or other noise of frustration. Kayla has been more fussy these days, I think mostly it revolves around her being tired and not able to put herself to sleep. Tummy time is increasing and Kayla is beginning to do the mini pushups. When on her back, Kayla sort of arches and moves in such a way that seems to be a precurser to rolling from back to front. She can roll to her side quite well. Other than tired fusses, she continues to be a joy and when in the mood will talk to you for several minutes. I think she’s also begun to sing along with me sometimes. She certainly is putting most everything in her mouth, and even her whole fist at times. We’re not sure how she does it…
A couple of weeks ago we put Kayla back in the tub and found out she loves it. She kicks and moves her arms like a water baby for sure. She has a pumping motion with her legs that she uses to propell herself one way or another. This is evident both in the bath and when she is laying down. The scooting has begun.

Breakfast with babes in the park

1 August 2005

Sunday we went to Gasworks Park for a potluck breakfast with other babies and their families. There were probably close to 30 babies there along with moms and or dads. It was really fun. Kayla had a great time as you can see. After Meg tasted Kayla’s dress, Kayla responded in kind by trying to eat Meg, who then ate Kayla’s hands, etc. Very cute. Meg is two days older than Kayla.
