pedals

14 September 2011

Miss Julia (age 4 1/2) decided just last night that she was to be a bike rider after all. She had dabbled in it a bit, but mostly with me holding on letting go for milliseconds at a time. But, Tim came in and told me she was riding all by herself. She practiced a lot and her is here picture today, day 2 of bike riding. She is getting pretty solid, but still can’t use the brakes to stop. She is just starting to practice that. So, no hills yet, but she is having fun and doesn’t want to stop. Go girl!

Another first day

12 September 2011

Julia began her second year of preschool today. She was so excited as she really loves her school. She told me the other day “I can’t wait to go to preschool, but I still love you mom.” She has made a couple of new friends who started this year, and it sort of feels like we never had time off. Strange how that can be.

Elk

10 September 2011

On Saturday evening a few friends and I drove into Snoqualmie to see if we could find the elk herd that my friend has seen many times with her son. It was a lucky night and they were out. There were probably 50-60 elk. I had no idea they were so close to Seattle. It was pretty amazing. Often we could hear them calling out to each other and was amazed by their sounds and how loud they were. It was quite a site to see.

1st grade

7 September 2011

Kayla started first grade today. She began the day somewhat hesitant and unsure. New teacher, new multi-age classroom, new rules, new lunch eating area (rather than in the classrooms like last year).

There are so few first graders in each of these new multi age classes as many 1st graders moved or went to different schools. Kayla is the only girl from her kindergarten class and there are only 8 girls (out of 23 or so). But, she said she made some new friends today, enjoyed her teacher and is excited to go back. Thank you Ms. Talmadge!

It was such a warm lovely day that I decided to treat the girls to an ice cream after school (since they didn’t get nearly enough of that while Oma and opa were in town ha ha ha). Anyhow, there was quite a long line, and by the time the girls got their cones and we went outside to eat, a truck had pulled up and a band was playing from the truck. There was a piano in the back, a guitar player on top and a homemade bucket base (?) player out front. They didn’t stay too long, enough for 8-10 songs, and then left again. They were really good and really fun and it made my afternoon.
