So, mere mintues after our playgroup left, Kayla took more steps and really did some walking. I think she watched the two walking girls of the group and waited till they left to practice. She was proud, daddy was proud and of course mommy was proud too.

Kayla and I have been trying to get out of the house everyday and do something fun. Sometimes for mommy, sometimes for Kayla. Today we went to the new zoomazium at the zoo. Kayla seemed to have fun though she accidentally tripped up a couple kids who weren’t looking down for crawlers. Basically the zoomazium is an indoor playspace. Kayla really liked the fish tank and the drums, and the little cave under the rock mountain.

Well, most exciting is Kayla taking a few steps by herself. Yup, she took them towards me, just a couple and then sort of fell into me. We think she could walk if she got up the nerve. One of Kayla’s favorite activities still, is having us help her walk around. We went on a hike again this weekend, going to poo-poo point. No paragliders this time but we had a nice picnic up top. Kayla did so well this time around. We hung out in the landing zone for a bit after the hike, this was Tim walking her through the parking lot.

Kayla weighed in at 17 pds 10 ounces, and 28 inches long. Just a little munchkin. I could of sworn she was heavier than that :-) (that’s the same height as 9 months?)
Kayla continues to sign a lot, adding new signs nearly every day. She likes to make jokes, blow zerberts on your cheek or belly and can be really friendly with her little playmates. Though she continues to have cranky days (don’t we all) and times where she exclusively wants to be carried, she’s a joy. Really likes books, even if it’s just to hand you one, you read the first page, she takes it and gives you another. I think it’s just to get all the books off the shelf really. It continues to amaze me how she learns and gets so many things and can communicate so well at one year of age.

We decided to go to Orcas Island for the weekend. A sort of extendo bday celebration, and me feeling the need to get away. We stayed at the same place Tim and I did the March before kayla was born, though in a guest room, not the super nice suite. The room worked out well and we enjoyed the stay there. Saturday morning we were hard pressed to find some breakfast as the “negative energy” bug seemed to have hit Orcas Island. We left the first restaurant (out of 3 choices) because they were so unfriendly, and found another that worked though the cook was having a bit of a hard day too. Luckily it didn’t get passed on in the food.
After breakfast we hit the Mayday festival in town. Kayla was super cute and really enjoyed the hula dancing. She was so impressed that when everyone else clapped she let go of Tim and clapped herself while standing alone. She was so proud of herself. She’s really getting better at that standing alone thing. After K. crawled all over town and was admired by many onlookers, we drove to Moran state park to go on a hike. Being as we are all out of shape, and Kayla wants to do nothing but walk (with assistance) or crawl, we didn’t make it to the end, but we did hike for a good couple hours or so. Kayla really wants to walk all the the time now. This would make her first trail in the woods. Way to go little northwesterner.

Since I hit the mid-thirty mark (35 for those of you that may not get that), I decided to do something special. I invited some mom friends over for bagels in the early part of the day. There were kids ranging in age from 4 months – 2 years, 4 months. We even had live music- Kayla on drums, Leo on the xylophone and Caroline on the piano.
That afternoon I met a couple friends at a local playground, and then for dinner Tim helped make popovers, mushroom gravy, roasted potatos/zuccini and tofu cutlets. It was very yummy. We topped that off with a rubarb pie. Had to have that one since I kept reading about them on the Mahnke blog :-)
