gymnastics

31 May 2014

Kayla wanted to try the Star League for gymnastics this year. It is a recreational team competitive league. I believe they take the top 3-5 scores from each team for the final total.

Her team didn’t win however they had a lot of fun and Kayla really enjoyed it. They competed in bars, vault, beam and floor.

science and engineering night

29 May 2014

Both girls entered the science fair this year. Julia worked alone and came up with the idea of seeing if an ice cube would melt faster in fizzy water of regular tap water.

Kids were encouraged this year to stay by their boards to answer any questions about their project. It was fun for them to walk around too. If you want to know that answer to the ice cube melting question feel free to ask Julia all about it.

Kayla worked with a friend this year. They learned about making crystals and used a salt solution I believe. Ask her more about it.

Word auciton

28 May 2014

Kayla’s class at school hosts a word auction every now and then. Whenever the kids come across a word they don’t know they write it down, look up the definition and get to use it as a word for the auction. They can bid as high as they have cards for. Kayla had 71 this time I think? Anyhow, she won the bid and had to stand in front of everyone and give the definition for the words the teacher read. She did great! I am always so impressed with the kids knowing these words. I am one who tends to know what the words mean but not the dictionary definition. At the last auction of the year she will get to be the auctioneer. The prizes for the winners are a book to keep and a very large chocolate bar.

Take me out to the ball game.

Tim was given 4 tickets to the Mariners game and so we decided to go. It was a late game, but as I hadn’t been to one since the Kingdome was around, we decided to keep the girls up late. I’m not sure how much of the game they really watched, but they did love the cotton candy and the Mariner’s moose. Julia tried her hardest to dance a lot and get herself on the video screen but to no avail. Oh, they won by the way, for anyone actually there for the game.

girl scout camp

10 May 2014

This mother’s day weekend the girls and I went to girl scout camp with their troop. They spent two nights there in a cabin. The camp was wooded with lots of trails, a lake, a meadow and lots of activities.

One of the girls favorite activities was taking out row boats on the lake. I was in Julia’s boat and she did really well. We might have gone in circles a few times but overall I’d say she is a strong row boater. It was very fun.

One of the activities was painting tote bags. They made a stencil first and then painted the design. They came out really well. It’s hard to tell from Julia’s photo above, but one the stencil is taken off they look good. They also explored with compasses, made bracelets, took a hike on a trail and learned about the local plants.

No girl scout camp would be complete without lots and lots of singing. Here the troop is leading the grace I think. The dining hall was up high surrounded by trees and with a view of the lake. Very pretty. There were also lots of campfire activities. The girls learned how to light matches, different kinds of fires you can set up and their purposes, and the most important of course, roasting marshmallows for smores.
