For memorial day weekend we were meant to go camping. But, with the forecast looking cold and rainy, we talked our friends into joining us at our cabin. The first night was just the girls and I, and there was some couch cuddling while the place warmed up.
John brought along a slack line which the girls all had great fun trying out. It isn’t easy.
One day we decided to try a nearby hike. The road up still had snow on it in places and at one point we just couldn’t go any further. So, instead of driving elsewhere, we pulled over and just had a hike along the road. The kids found it interesting, stopping along the trail to do the 2 year old version of yoga. We even got to hear the Sasquatch call. Not something you hear everyday.

The gym teacher at the girl’s school has a few different interns from UW this year. One of them is the quarterback for the Huskies football team. As Julia’s kindergarten class didn’t have as much chance to have him teach their class, they were treated to a special class with 4 of the huskies players. The kids were thrown passes, got to throw the ball back and then they all played a game together. Pretty fun watching the “big kids” having as much fun as the little ones. You may notice several of the girls in dresses. This is because they had just come back from visiting their grandpals at the Hearthstone. It think it makes the whole football game that much more cute.

The girls have both made peanut butter and jelly sandwiches before for Heroes for the Homeless who then delivers them to the homeless throughout Seattle. Kayla wanted to do it again, so we involved her gir lscout troop. It was quite the production. First they wrote letters and had all the supplies donated. Then they (and us adults) made 260 sandwiches. I think I am still finding bits of peanut butter around the house. It was a lot of sandwiches but the girls had lots of fun making them.
The sandwiches need to be brought to Heroes for the Homeless early in the morning. I think part of why Kayla wanted to do this again was because last time, she got a huge hot chocolate covered with large marshmellows when we went out to eat afterwards. This year we went to breakfast again, but the same restaurant was not open so early. We found a different one open at 6am. It had a slightly smaller hot chocolate, but it still worked fine. She was a fun early morning breakfast date.

The girls girl scout troop went on an overnight camping trip to a camp near Mt. Rainier. The adults and kids were separated during the day so I’m not too sure what the girls all did. I made a box oven, buddy burner, survival bracelet, sit upon and went for a walk in the woods. We all helped clean up the “campground garbage” which was really any tree debris left too close to where it could catch on fire. In the evening there was a big campfire sing along. (Look for Kayla in blue on the log in the left 2nd from the right. Julia is sitting at a picnic table in the right corner of the photo. Purple shirt with orange scarf on head). The next day we went to Northwest trek and took a tram ride to see some of the animals that lived there. That day we were lucky enough to see at least one of each kind of animal there. That included 3 moose. We didn’t have time to stay and see the rest of NW trek as Julia had a soccer game. But it was a pretty fun weekend all around.

Julia decided to enter the science night at her school this year. She wanted to make a volcano. She partnered with Tim for a research project about what makes lava red and a model volcano. Feel free to ask her the answer next time you talk to her. Her volcano was a hit and the kids all had great fun making the lava pour out. As we were out of red food coloring, other colors were used and it became quite a colorful display.
