first hike

26 May 2012

For memorial day weekend we headed up to Bellingham as Tim and I took part in the ski to sea race this year. Tim did the mountain bike leg and I did the canoe leg. It was fun though the canoe part was not without incident. The girls seemed to have some fun too hanging out and swimming in the pool at the hotel.

The next day I wanted to go for a hike in the woods. We haven’t done this in a really long time as the girls usually very strongly resist. We went to a hike Tim and I did last year. The girls did fantastic for most of the hike. We never actually got to the lake, but considering my knee was hurting badly from my canoe incident the day before and I could barely get downhill it was fine to stop early. Both girls said the hike was the highlight of their weekend!

Miss Bamboo

We recently renewed our membership to the zoo and have enjoyed our few visits there. Julia and I fed the giraffes, which was fantastic. We were right up there in their faces. A different day we decided to take Kayla and all feed the elephants. Well, Miss Bamboo who is 45 years old was the elephant we fed. She got closer than in this photo and it was pretty cool too. During my zoo docent training I was able to get into the elephant barn and feed them and pet their trunks. The keeper said they don’t do that anymore, so I feel pretty lucky. This was cool too, just to be so up close to this cool animal. We also feed the birds pretty much every time we go. Those $1 sticks will add up, but it is pretty fun.

who?

Miss Julia has twice this month asked if she could walk home from school. Huh? Who is this child? We walked once there and once home. She seems to be all done with it now, but hey, that was twice she initiated it! After a short family bike ride on mother’s day, and my commenting on how fun that was, Julia asked if she could bike at greenlake. Notice I say “at” greenlake. We did not go all the way around. In fact we did not go far, but hey if she is initiating the riding I will comply. Maybe there’s hope yet!
